  She looked at Jennifer with a curious expression and asked, “Do they know? When people say these things, do they know their words are more than just words?”

  “I don’t know,” said Jennifer. “I don’t really think about things like that.”

  “I’m excited to see him,” Susan said, thinking of Ready again. Then, as if speaking to no one, she repeated the words he had spoken a few minutes before. “There are only a few people in the world who really matter to me. You’re one. And I want you to know…” She looked down into the stroller by her side and traced his features in the faces of the sleeping twins. “…before you walk away again, and go back to your life with her.”
